Pet air travel regulations 2026: everything you need to know

Pet air travel: 2026 regulations

The rules governing pet travel by plane are both strict and variable depending on the airline. In 2026, several important developments are worth knowing before taking your pet in the air.

IATA standards for transport carriers

The IATA (International Air Transport Association) sets international standards for animal transport containers. An IATA approved carrier must:

Dimensions and materials

  • Be made of rigid material (hard plastic or metal)
  • Allow the animal to stand up, turn around and lie down normally
  • Have ventilation on at least 3 sides (4 sides for hold)
  • Have a secure closing system (screws or metal latch)
  • Have a waterproof and absorbent bottom

  • In cabin or in hold?

    In cabin (under the seat)

  • Conditions: Animal + carrier bag < 8 kg generally
  • Soft carrier allowed
  • Limit: 1 animal per passenger and limited number per flight

  • In hold (cargo)

  • For animals > 8 kg or too large for under-seat
  • Rigid IATA carrier mandatory
  • Pressurised and air-conditioned space

  • Mandatory documents

    For intra-European flights

    1. European pet passport (issued by an approved vet)

    2. Microchip (mandatory since 2011 in the EU)

    3. Up-to-date rabies vaccination
